2025 Pre-Engineering Boat Launch

Students in the Mid-Coast School of Technology’s one-year Pre-Engineering program celebrated a resounding success on Field Day, the last day of school, as their meticulously designed and constructed cardboard boats bravely took to the ocean. This annual end-of-year project challenged students to apply engineering principles in a fun, hands-on environment, culminating in a highly anticipated launch event.

For this project, Pre-Engineering students worked collaboratively in teams, immersing themselves in the research, design, and construction phases of their unique floatation devices, all crafted entirely from cardboard. Under the guidance of their teacher, Bryan McCarthy, students transformed theoretical knowledge into practical application, learning about buoyancy, structural integrity, and material science.

The creativity and individual style of each team were evident in their final boat designs. One team showcased their passion for gaming with a boat inspired by the popular Minecraft aesthetic, while another pushed the boundaries of innovation by integrating LED lights and a Bluetooth speaker into their vessel, creating a truly unique on-water experience.

The excitement peaked on Field Day as the entire student body gathered to witness the launch. Cheers erupted as each team carefully maneuvered their creations into the water, with Mr. McCarthy accompanying them on his paddleboard, offering support and encouragement. The boats performed exceptionally well, demonstrating the students’ hard work and the effectiveness of their designs.

The event also served as a wonderful opportunity for connection, as previous Pre-Engineering students attended the launch, eagerly engaging with this year’s participants to discuss their builds and share experiences. The successful launch not only marked the culmination of a challenging and rewarding project but also highlighted the innovative spirit and collaborative learning fostered at Mid-Coast School of Technology.
