Mid-Coast School of Technology (Mid-Coast) proudly announces that its dedicated Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) teacher, Mike Drinkwater, has been presented with the esteemed Merit Award by the Maine Board of Emergency Medical Services. The award was presented as part of the annual EMS Week celebrations at the Hall of Flags in Augusta. This recognition celebrates Mike’s exceptional commitment and profound impact on emergency medical services education and the community over his distinguished 16-year tenure at Mid-Coast.
The Merit Award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication, leadership, and contributions to the advancement of Emergency Medical Services in Maine. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by the Maine Board of Emergency Medical Services, recognizing those who go above and beyond in their service and commitment to the field.
National EMS Week, observed annually in May, is a nationwide initiative to celebrate and recognize the vital work of emergency medical services professionals who serve our communities around the clock. The week often includes various activities such as public education programs, safety training, and recognition events to highlight the critical role of EMS in public health and safety. In Maine, EMS Week commonly features a remembrance ceremony for fallen EMS professionals and an awards ceremony, such as the one where Mike was honored.

Mike has been an invaluable asset to the Mid-Coast School of Technology for nearly two decades, teaching both firefighting and EMT classes. Beyond his role as a highly respected teacher, he has consistently worked on local departments, bringing real-world experience and insight directly into the classroom. His passion for teaching and fostering the next generation of EMTs is evident in the remarkable achievements of his students. As recently as this year, his dedication has helped prepare students to reach the national level in the SkillsUSA competition, a testament to his rigorous instruction and unwavering support. During these events, students also had the valuable opportunity to meet and network with state representatives, including local representative Chip Curry.
Mike’s receipt of the Merit Award underscores Mid-Coast School of Technology’s commitment to providing top-tier career and technical education, led by experienced and highly skilled teachers. His impact extends far beyond the classroom, shaping competent and compassionate emergency medical professionals who serve communities across Maine.
